my first compost-post!

in our efforts to be a little green, we started a compost pile in our back yard. its been kinda fun, actually! i got myself a shovel, and have been diggin' and buryin', then diggin' some more...i feel like a kid in a slightly funky sandbox!

anyhoo, i've had a trash bucket next to my kitchen sink forever (to collect kitchen scraps...mostly things we want to throw out immediately, rather than compost materials only). since we started composting, i started using it exclusively for things i want to compost (so no meat stuff). but i was actually being counter-green, because i was putting a plastic bag liner in the bucket, taking the liner out to the compost pile to dump the stuff, then throwing the bag away (cause it was yucky from sitting with kitchen scraps for a few days). how anti-green can ya get? i looked around and saw some commercial compost kitchen pails online, but they were a bit
expensive and not so cute. so we decided to make our own!

first i took a plain click-clack container...

next i opened up the lid, drilled holes on the bottom and top with a large drill bit, and put a charcoal filter in the middle of the lid (its a kitty litter box -- booda-dome -- filter...fit perfectly!) to help minimize the smells if i don't take the scraps to my pile right away.

finally, i painted the inside of the bucket with spray paint for plastic...thanks, r, for the suggestion to paint inside rather than the outside!! it came out looking very shiny and pretty...almost looks like it was purchased that color! and now (tada!) i have a super cool, super green compost pail for my kitchen!
